Research & Productivity

Advances in agricultural productivity have led to abundant and affordable food and fiber throughout most of the developed world. Public and private agricultural research has been the foundation of much of this growth in productivity. ERS quantifies and measures agricultural productivity increases, analyzes the sources of these increases, and investigates the roles of both public and private sectors in enhancing the stock of agricultural knowledge and developing new technologies.


Spotlights

Agricultural Resources and Environmental Indicators: Knowledge Resources and Productivity—Agriculture around the world depends on seed stocks to maintain and improve important crop attributes. This section examines crop genetic resources, biotechnology, agricultural research and (resulting agricultural productivity), and the status of global resources influencing food production.

Agricultural Productivity in the United States—Increased productivity is the main contributor to growth in U.S. agriculture. This data set provides estimates of productivity growth in the United States for 1948-2004, and estimates of productivity growth and relative productivity levels across States for 1960-1999.
