This brooch, from the south coast of Peru, is based on a detail from an ovoid (egg shaped) vase depicting the Paracas mythological Oculate Being. Dating back to 250 B.C. to 125 A.D., this creature was a composite image with fox, feline, killer whale, and bird attributes. Paracas potters were more interested in the decoration of the ceramic surfaces than in the sculptural form. Incised lines were often filled with brightly colored resins in a post-fired application.
