Power O'Malley was born in Waterford, Ireland in 1870. He spent the majority of his life in the United States and became know as an interpreter of Irish life and scenery. He studied at the National Academy of Design with Robert Henri and Walter Shirlaw. He spent many years on the West Coast and for several years painted covers for Life magazine. The record does not capture where this powerful image of the reality of child labor may have been printed. It stands out as more the exception than the rule for O'Malley's art work. O'Malley experimented with various mediums and he produced mural paintings, etchings, book illustrations and sculpture but eventually specialized in oil paintings of Irish landscapes and scenes. He had returned to Ireland for about ten years where he focused on landscapes. He returned to the United States and continued painting. Because his work was in a very traditional academic style it went out of fashion and he was forgotten but his work has recently generated a revival of interest. He died in New York in 1946.
