Adam Clayton Powell, 1908-1972. As John F. Kennedy moved into the White House, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. took over as Chairman of the Education and Labor Committee in the House of Representatives. Over the next few years, he guided the passage of 50 bills to support school lunches, minimum wage increases and aid to public schools. Thirty years earlier, he had worked on many of these same issues to assist the homeless and unemployed in Harlem. That program's headquarters was at the Abyssinian Baptist Church, where his father was pastor. Elected to the New York City Council in 1941, he won a seat in Congress in 1944 and served until 1970. Some Congressmen accused him of budget manipulations, excessive trips overseas and absenteeism. Eventually the House voted to remove his seniority privileges. MEDIUM: 1 photographic print.
