This World War II editorial cartoon shows a husky Uncle Sam smoking a cigarette in a holder, much like the president, Franklin Roosevelt did. The cartoon was published only six months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and there was a huge amount of anger and energy to pursue the war with all the resources the United States government could muster.

Charles Harris Kuhn started his cartoon career working for the Denver Rocky Mountain News in 1919. He went to work for the Indianapolis News and in 1947 created a comic strip called "Grandma" which ran until 1969. He also was the author of the books Boy and Girl Cartoonist: A Complete Course in Cartooning, published 1936, and Kuhn's Course in Cartooning; America's Number One Cartoon Course, published in 1944.
