Only ten square miles in area, the obscure island of Guadacanal became the turning point for American ground, air and sea forces in the South Pacific. More than 11,000 Marines landed in August 1942 and fought the entrenched Japanese until victory six months later. The cost was 6,000 American casualties and 24,000 Japanese ones. American aircraft took off from the famous Henderson Field, a muddy airstrip near the island's edge. The Navy fought in six major battles in the ocean around the island and in the early days suffered considerable losses.
