of Florida 1979-1986; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in
1986; reelected in 1992 and 1998 and served from January 3, 1987, to January 3,
2005; chair, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (One Hundred Third
Congress), Select Committee on Intelligence (One Hundred Seventh Congress
[January 3-20, 2001; June 6, 2001-January 3, 2003]); was not a candidate for
reelection to the Senate in 2004; was an unsuccessful candidate for Democratic
nomination for president in 2004.
