Cornyn Tours North Texas Flood Damage

Meets with flood victims in Haltom City; Receives updates from officials in Collin, Hamilton, Hood, Parker and Tarrant Counties; Offers all assistance necessary

Tuesday, July 3, 2007

HALTOM CITY, Texas—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn traveled to Haltom City on Tuesday to offer assistance to local officials and area residents affected by recent flooding. Following a tour of the damage and a visit with families at the Skyline Mobile Home Estates and those threatened by erosion at Big Fossil Creek, Sen. Cornyn said he will continue pressing for all support necessary in the recovery efforts.

“I will continue working to ensure the flood-damaged areas in North Texas and other parts of the state receive the recovery assistance they need,” Sen. Cornyn said. “By meeting with those affected and taking a first-hand look at the damage, this visit provided the ability to best determine how to help support the recovery efforts.”

Sen. Cornyn met with first responders and received briefings from several officials in the region, including Collin County Judge Keith Self, Hamilton County Judge Randy Mills, Hood County Judge Andy Rash and Parker County Judge Mark Riley. Sen. Cornyn was joined by U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth, and Haltom City Mayor Bill Lanford.

Sen. Cornyn continues working with Gov. Perry’s office, FEMA and the White House to ensure federal assistance will be delivered promptly. On Friday, Sen. Cornyn, along with Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, announced that President Bush has approved a major disaster declaration for the State of Texas as a result of the recent severe storms. This declaration will trigger the release of federal funds to help people and communities in Cooke, Coryell, Denton, Grayson, Lampasas and Tarrant counties. FEMA said that damage surveys are continuing in other areas, and more counties and additional forms of assistance may be designated after the assessments are fully completed.

On Sunday, Sen. Cornyn traveled to Burnet County to offer continued support to local officials and area residents affected by recent flooding there.

Sen. Cornyn serves on the Armed Services, Judiciary and Budget Committees. In addition, he is Vice Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference and the Senate Select Committee on Ethics. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Border Security and Refugees subcommittee and the Armed Services Committee’s Airland subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice and Bexar County District Judge.
