You have now had a chance to review Congressman Dingell’s summary of draft legislation to create a ‘carbon tax’. Like many of the nation’s leading economists, the Congressman believes such a bill would be an effective means to reduce consumption. This would help us cut greenhouse gas emissions 60-80 percent by 2050, the number scientists agree is necessary to reverse the effects of global warming. Specifically, the bill would:
Impose a stiff tax on carbon
dioxide emissions
Increase the tax on gasoline
Phase out the mortgage interest deduction on “McMansions”
It is important to note this is not in place of the economy wide cap and trade plan the Congressman is working on in the House Energy and Commerce - rather it is in addition to that legislation.
