Beyond The Horizons 2009 Concludes
After providing free medical treatment to over 7,000 rural residents, the partnership of U.S. and T&T medical teams held a closing ceremony on August 20, 2009 in Barrackpore to formally conclude nearly three months of service to communities across Trinidad.  Since its inception in June, thousands of citizens received medical and dental attention in community centers in Toco, Matura, Valencia, Debe and San Fernando.

Trinidadian Journalist returns from Regional Economic Program in the U.S. 
On August 15, Mr. Raphael Lall, a reporter of the Trinidad Guardian, returned from a dynamic professional exchange program organized by the U.S. Department of State on Economic Recovery and the Evolving Global Financial System.  The three-week program took the group to various cities including Washington, D.C., New York and Kansas City. Media Presentation for Youth from Rio Claro
On August 13, Embassy PAO and IRC Staff welcomed 24 students from the East Trinidad towns of Rio Claro, Manzanilla and Mayaro for a presentation on working with the media, film-making and environmental awareness. The students also learned about educational opportunities abroad and asked questions about careers in communications and media.

U.S. Embassy Recognizes Returned Fulbright Scholars
On August 7, a reception was given by the U.S. Embassy and the Fulbright Alumni Association of Trinidad and Tobago, to recognize over 30 returned Trinbagonian Fulbright Scholars for their academic achievements and contributions in their fields of work and study to both the USA and T&T.

Press Dialog with Visiting U.S. Dept. of State Officials 
On August 4, Trinbagonian reporters from Newsday, the Guardian, I-95 and Power 102FM attended a roundtable with two visiting U.S. Department of State officials: Ambassador Michael Kirby,  Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs and Ms. Velia De Pirro, Office Director for the Caribbean, Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.  Discussion focused on U.S.-Caribbean cooperation on security, trade and energy.

U.S. Embassy Reaches out to At-Risk Youth from Point Fortin
On July 31, a group of 30 secondary students and 5 adult chaperones heard presentations from several embassy officers about the U.S. educational system, culture and geography. The youth are part of a community program that supports learning and cultural development for at-risk students through “Homework Centers” in places such as Point Fortin, a town in far Southeastern Trinidad. U.S. and T&T Team up and Provide Free Medical Treatment in Matura
On July 30, the visiting U.S. military medical team set up a mobile clinic in the Matura Government Primary School, and on the first day treated hundreds of local residents seeking free general medical, dental and optometry exams and treatment. The U.S. team partnered with a diverse array of local civic organizations as well as TT and local government authorities. The mission in Matura follows several days in Toco, and the mobile clinic will also serve the communities of Valencia and San Fernando before departing in late August. (more)

U.S. Embassy Honors Finalist for 2009 International Women of Courage Award
On July 28, U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Len Kusnitz today honored Diana Mahabir-Wyatt  for achieving a place as one of the top finalists in the Western Hemisphere for the U.S. Department of State’s 2009 International Women of Courage Award in recognition of  her advocacy work on behalf of women and children in Trinidad and Tobago. The ceremony was held at the U.S Embassy to honor Mrs. Mahabir-Wyatt and to recognize and celebrate her work for women’s equality and children’s rights in the Caribbean. (more)

U.S. Embassy Recognizes Trinbagonian International Visitors Grantees
On July 24, U.S. Embassy Charge Len Kusnitz and PA Staff hosted a luncheon send-off for three participants of this year’s International Visitor Leadership Program.  The departing participants, Margaret Sampson-Brown, Leston Davis and Raphael Lall set off for their respective three-week programs of professional exchange in the areas of U.S. Economic Policy and Law Enforcement.  They were joined by recently-returned IVLP alumni, Vidjaya Ramkhalawan, Charles Sabga and Avryl Mohammed, who attended exchange programs in the areas of Environment, Energy and Human Rights policy.

Student Group from Mayaro visits Embassy Information Resource Center
On July 21, A student group visited the U.S. Embassy from Mayaro District (Southeastern Trinidad) to hear a presentation on U.S. history and government by outgoing Political Counselor, John Cushing.  The students also learned about application criteria and procedures for U.S. colleges and universities.  A lively question and answer session assured that the students could ask specific questions on topics such as U.S. society, school equivalency and Embassy programs. Port of Spain celebrates Fourth of July 2009
The Embassy of the United States of America in Port of Spain welcomed over 600 guests to festivities at the Ambassador’s residence on July 2.  The event featured the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment band and celebrated the 233rd anniversary of the U.S. independence. (more)
