Library of Congress in June of 1983 after Fomeen's death. Fomeen was a
Russian-born
composer, accordionist, and orchestra leader who performed in both mainstream

Russian emigre communities of York City and the eastern seaboard between
the 1920s and
the 1950s, recording for the RCA Victor, Standard, Seva, National, and Decca
labels. The
collection, which included sheet music and music manuscripts, photographs,
diaries,
scrapbooks, correspondence, and instruments, was dispersed to the Music, Recorded
Sound, and Motion Picture divisions within the Library of Congress. The Archive

The Carnegie Ceilidh was founded in 1961 by Howard T. Glasser in Pittsburgh

known as Carnegie Ceilidh Folk Music Society. Programs, featuring Pete

Watson, Norman Kennedy, and others, use the name Carnegie Ceilidh of Carnegie
Institute
of Technology, or just Carnegie Ceilidh in 1965. Some programs were presented
in
conjunction with the Pittsburgh Folklore Society, which Glasser served as program
director
(1966-1968). In 1969 Glasser began teaching at the University of Rhode Island
in Kingston,
and founded the Kingston Ceilidh Folk Music Workshop there. The collection

Description: Sixty-five reel-to-reel tapes, two hundred thirty-three
audiocassettes, over 24,000
black-and-white and color photographs, twenty-two 3/4-inch and 1/2-inch
videocassettes,
fifty linear feet of correspondence, ephemera, exhibit materials, fieldnotes,
photo logs,
publicity, reports, sound logs, and video logs, and twelve artifacts from
the Italian
Americans in the West project, an American Folklife Center field research
project that
focused on the cultural traditions of Italian Americans in the western
United States. The
materials were compiled in 1988-93; the field research took place in 1989-91
at Gilroy and
San Pedro, California; Pueblo, Colorado; central and eastern Nevada; Carbon
County, Utah;
and Walla Walla, Washington. The project included the publication of a book
of essays,
Old Ties, New Attachments: Italian-American Folklife in the West (Washington,
D.C.:
American Folklife Center,1992), and a traveling exhibition of the same name
that opened in
October 1992. A guide to this collection is available at:

materials documenting the traditions of Carbon County, Utah. The project was
a part of the
Center's commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the voyage of Christopher

religious music and belief among the
Old Believers sect of the Russian Orthodox faith. Among the items in the collection

spiral notebook which delineates a musical notation system which is used to

music in the collection, several small booklets of hymns written in Cyrillic,
some Russian
language lessons, and a small booklet of catechism of the Greek Old Orthodox
faith. Most
of the material is either mimeographed or dittoed, and much of it is in Cyrillic
script. The
items were largely produced in the 1950s in Erie, Pennsylvania, by Rev. V.
Smolakov.

were recorded in Sumadija, and some epic songs were recorded in Macedonia

Nagoricino and Brazda. From the professional Macedonian folklore ensemble
I recorded in
Skopje songs of various sorts, and dances..." "Seven tapes are
of the Opatija Festival,
