FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[United States Congress]

WASHINGTON, D.C.—STATUS OF $2 MILLION WITHHELD IN FY1999

Congressman Faleomavaega announced today that he is hopeful that the Senate and House Interior Appropriations Committee will place language in this year’s appropriations bill to release the $2 million withheld from ASG in FY99.

“Senator Inouye and I are working with other members of the House and Senate for the release of the funds,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.  “As of today, both the Senate and House Interior Appropriations conferees have agreed to work with us for the release of the funds.  Language is now being drafted to address the issue.  Barring any unforeseen complications with the tobacco loan agreement, we should be able to finalize the process soon.”

“Earlier, I recommended reprogramming $1.1 million for the ASCC library, but it is my understanding that the Governor would rather use it to purchase another vessel for Manu’a,” Faleomavaega continued.  “Both are worthwhile projects, and I support whatever the Fono and Governor decide.”

“For now, I’m just pleased that Senator Inouye and I have put a plan in place for the release of the $2 million,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.  “After all, the point here is that no matter how the money is reprogrammed, the people of American Samoa will benefit.”
