WASHINGTON, D.C.—FALEOMAVAEGA MEETS WITH NEW DIRECTOR, PACIFIC OCEAN DIVISION, U.S. ARMY  CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Congressman Faleomavaega announced today that he welcomed Brigadier General Ronald Johnson, the new Director of the Pacific Ocean Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to his Washington office.

“General Johnson and I met to discuss two matters of critical importance to American Samoa,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.  “We discussed the need for an immediate assessment of American Samoa’s shorelines and the possibility of constructing a wharf for a small boat marina on the Western District shoreline.”

“As a matter of expediency, I asked General Johnson to conduct a comprehensive review and study of American Samoa’s shorelines and beaches for the possible construction of seawalls to prevent further erosion caused by heavy ocean waves and flood conditions,” Faleomavaega said.  “I also requested an Army Corps of Engineers assessment of the Western District shoreline on Tutuila island for the possible construction of a mid-size marina similar to the marinas built on the islands of Ofu and Ta’u.”

“I explained to the General that there is tremendous interest now for fishermen and alia-class boat owners who live in the Western District to conduct fishing activities in the Western area,” the Congressman said.  “However, because there are no marinas available in the Western district, these fishermen have to travel to the Eastern district which adds to the costs and expenses of their fishing operations.”

“To assist us in addressing these matters, General Johnson has agreed to conduct an Army Corps of Engineers review,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.  “I also intend to personally bring this matter to attention of Mike Parker, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works.  I am hopeful that the Assistant Secretary will also support this initiative so that we can work together in building our local infrastructure.”
