War on Terrorism
By all accounts, the Surge has been successful in reducing measurable violence in Iraq by 80% and dropping civilian deaths to their lowest levels in more than two years. Iraqi lawmakers must seize this opportunity to unify Iraq politically and ensure these gains are sustained following the departure of the remaining Surge combat troops in July. Their successful efforts will likely allow U.S. commanders to continue permanent troop reductions this fall.
