Twenty-one lawmakers, including U.S. Reps. Brian Baird and Jay Inslee from Washington state, took a new approach toward easing pain at the pump. They introduced legislation in the House that would crack down on unregulated energy speculators who could be manipulating markets and driving up gas prices.

Ocean Energy Milestone

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee today announced a milestone in the government’s support for the renewable energy potential of oceans through provisions that he included in the House-Senate energy bill. The energy bill’s ocean provisions are the most recognition that the federal government has given to the potential of ocean power in over 20 years. While Inslee voted against the overall energy legislation due to its significant subsidies for the oil, gas and coal industries, he was able to improve parts of the bill such as including ocean energy as one of the government’s priorities.

America Deserves a Better Energy Policy

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee voted against the House-Senate energy bill today because the proposal does little to break America's dependence on foreign oil, does not address climate change and fuel efficiency, and falls short on investments in clean energy technology. Inslee was successful in improving the legislation with several clean energy provisions and will continue to work to pass a New Apollo Energy Act for hi-tech clean energy, instead of the petroleum-based legislation that the Majority Party has pushed.

Successful Wind Energy Amendment

During today’s consideration of the Energy Policy Act, the House of Representatives passed an amendment offered by U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee to promote wind energy production on federal lands. Inslee’s amendment will help lower wind energy costs and increase wind energy production by cutting in half the amount of rental fees that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) can charge wind energy producers for wind turbines placed on federal lands.

Inslee Energy Amendments Pass Resources

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee’s three energy amendments passed today in the House Resources Committee. The amendments will be included in the energy bill to be considered on the House floor in coming weeks. Inslee’s first amendment creates standards and a process for wind energy generators to locate on Bureau of Land Management lands, thereby streamlining what is now a very complicated and ill-defined process. The amendment also cuts in half the amount of royalties or fees wind energy generators pay to the government, which are similar to assistance the Majority party is giving to the oil, gas, and coal industries.

Renewable Energy Amendment

Today in the Commitee on Banking and Financial Services, Inslee successfully added an amendment to the Export-Import Bank Re-authorization Act. The amendment says that the Export-Import Bank should invest no less than 5% of all energy related assistance in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

Clean Energy Incentives Act

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) was joined by Reps. Christopher Shays (R-CT), Zach Wamp (R-TN), Mark Udall (D- CO), Brian Baird (D-WA) and others to introduce the Clean Energy Incentives Act (H.R. 2392). Oil Drilling in Arctic Wildlife Refuge

Did you know that there is one place in America where birds from all fifty states congregate each summer in a giant national breeding convention? It's called the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Three weeks ago I went with some other Members of Congress, to see for ourselves whether or not the area is something worth preserving. After three days camped out on the banks of the Aichilik River 25 miles from the Arctic Ocean, and a full day touring the Prudhoe Bay oilfield, the answer became obvious.
