Inslee to weigh troop withdrawal plan during visit to Iraq

17 November 2005

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee will travel to Iraq during a congressional recess to learn firsthand about the situation there as he considers a new troop withdrawal proposal.

Ranking Member John Murtha of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee today said he'll introduce legislation to redeploy American forces in Iraq within six months because troops have done all they can militarily, but cannot remedy remaining political problems.

Inslee, who voted against the invasion of Iraq in 2002, is scheduled to meet with American troops and Iraqi leaders during the four-day trip. In a meeting with a senior Iraqi official, he's expected to describe growing resistance among members of Congress, like Murtha, to indefinite military action in Iraq.

This will be Inslee's first visit to the region. It will come during a break Congress takes each November for the Thanksgiving holiday.
