Introduction of Baggage Screening Act

October 4, 2001

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee was joined by fellow Members of Congress to introduce the "Baggage Screening Act" today. The new bipartisan legislation calls for mandatory screening of checked luggage, and is being offered to encourage House Leadership to include baggage screening in any airport security packages.

Said Inslee, "I've been told that the vast majority of checked luggage in American airports is not x-rayed, or otherwise screened. That makes no sense - screening baggage is such a basic idea, we should not be cutting corners on aviation security. Americans deserve to know that the luggage riding in the belly of their plane has been inspected, just like their carry-on pieces. It is absolutely appalling that we claim to be serious about airport security, but don't even screen most checked luggage."

Inslee and twenty-three other Members sent a letter urging House Leadership to include mandatory screening of checked luggage in new airline security legislation earlier this week.
