Inslee offers bill to boost clean electricity

30 Janaury 2007

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee introduced legislation in the House that would allow families, farms, schools and small businesses that generate their own clean energy to receive credit for surplus power they put back into the electricity grid.

Specifically, Inslee's Home Energy Generation Act removes regulatory barriers that prevent Americans from generating their own electricity, from fuel cells or renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal or biomass. It improves reliability and safety by setting uniform national standards for interconnection of electricity generation units into the grid. Most importantly, the bill allows so-called net metering - spinning existing electricity meters backwards for individuals who generate more energy than they consume.

Inslee, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has been pushing for net metering since his first term as representative for the 1st Congressional District.
