Inslee Calls Attention to Highway Work Zone Fatalities

8 April 2003

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee joined the American Traffic Safety Services Association, the American Road Transportation Builders Association, and state departments of transportation to announce "National Work Zone Awareness Week." Here he joins James Austirch from Washington D.C.'s Department of Transportation at an event to call attention to the nation's traffic work-zone fatalities. The flourescent cones behind Inslee and Austirch represent the hundreds of people killed every year in work-zone related crashes. In 2001, the latest year for which this information is available, 1,079 people were killed in work-zone related crashes. Four out of five of them were motorists. Inslee has introduced Roadway Safety Legislation to help address this issue.
