$4.89 Million Grant for Mountlake Terrace Park & Ride Expansion

18 April 2005

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee announced today that Community Transit will be receiving $4.89 million from the Department of Transportation for the expansion of the Mountlake Terrace Park & Ride. The funding will be used for the construction of a parking garage as part of the enhanced Park & Ride facility. This grant completes the federal earmark portion of the funding for the project.

Said Inslee, "Expanding the Mountlake Terrace Park and Ride will help commuters and decrease traffic on our highways. Puget Sound residents would rather spend time with their families or loved ones than be stuck on the Interstate. I applaud the commitment of Senator Murray and all of the Washington State delegation in supporting these much-needed transportation projects."

Added Joyce Olson, CEO of Community Transit, "Without this type of federal funding, we would not be able to complete major projects like doubling the capacity of the Mountlake Terrace Park and Ride. Public transportation is a critical part of keeping our roads and freeways functional. This project will make it possible to take nearly 500 cars a day off I-5 during peak hours, helping ease congestion for everyone."

The grant is made possible by transportation appropriation bills supported by U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, U.S. Senator Murray and other Members of the Washington State delegation.

Summary of the New Mountlake Terrace Park & Ride

  1. Estimated start of construction: Fall 2006
  2. Estimated opening: Fall 2007
  3. Capacity: 880 parking spaces
  4. Parking structure: A three-deck parking garage, either on the lower or upper portion of the current Park & Ride
  5. Funding sources: $12.9 million in federal funds and $2.8 million in local funds. While the announced $4.89 million grant completes the federal earmark portion of this funding, Community Transit expects to receive additional funding from other sources of federal grants to complete its total federal funding.

According to Community Transit, the project will create no impacts to sensitive areas, endangered species or their habitat, and it will not affect any trees at Mountlake Terrace's Veterans Memorial Park, which is adjacent to the current Park & Ride.
