One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War was fought in Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania, on July 1-3, 1863. General Robert E. Lee came face
to face with a Union army led by General George Meade. On July 3,
Lee sent three divisions, about 15,000 men in all, against the Union.
This oval-shaped map by Theodore Ditterline depicts troops and artillery
positions along with roads, railways, and houses with names of residents.
The Library has one of the finest collections of Civil War printed
maps and the foremost collection of Confederate field maps, numbering
more than 2,300.
