Identity theft is a fast-growing problem with more than 9 million Americans affected last year. In an age when information and records are easily available on the Internet, it is important that you keep your Social Security number as secret as possible. With a Social Security number, criminals can easily access a victim’s bank accounts, obtain credit cards and assume a false identity.
Congress must take steps to protect the American people from identity theft. The Social Security Number Misuse Prevention Act, S. 238, is currently being debated in the Senate. Protecting our freedoms and privacy are top priorities for me. I will follow this bill closely as it makes its way through the legislative process.
