Clifford Berryman made this drawing on Armistice Day, ten years
after the truce of November 11, 1918, that ended World War I. He
depicts Uncle Sam standing before a garlanded tomb and paying his
respects to Americans who served in that conflict. A Pulitzer Prize
winning cartoonist and Washington institution, Berryman used fine
pen and ink lines and cross hatching to render the figure, tomb,
and classical backdrop to create a solemn mood that commemorates
the first World War=s end, and the service and sacrifices by soldiers
of America=s armed forces. In 1954 Armistice Day was renamed Veterans
Day to honor all American veterans.
