Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is the W.E.B. Du Bois professor of the humanities, chair of Afro-American Studies, and director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University. Among his publications are several works of literary criticism including The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of Afro-American Literary Criticism (1988), winner of the 1989 American Book Award. He is editor of two anthologies, co-editor of the encyclopedia Encarta Africana, and author of Wonders of the African World (1999), the book companion to the BBC/PBS television series of the same name. His most recent book, which he edited, is The Bondswoman's Narrative by Hannah Craft (Warner Books, 2002). Mr. Gates received the 1998 National Humanities Medal.
