Alice McDermott is the author of many widely acclaimed short stories and novels. Her short stories have appeared in Ms., Redbook, Mademoiselle and Seventeen. Her novel, That Night (1987), was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the National Book Award, the PEN/Faulkner Award and a Pulitzer Prize. At Weddings and Wakes (1992) was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1993. She won the 1998 National Book Award for fiction for Charming Billy (1998). Her most recent novel is After This (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2006). The recipient of a Giles Whiting Writer’s Award, Ms. McDermott lives in Bethesda, Maryland, and teaches writing at Johns Hopkins University.
