RSS FAQ

What is RSS?
RSS is a standard for syndicating frequently updated content to users. The advantage of RSS is that updates to your subscribed channels are delivered automatically to your RSS news reader in an easy to browse format. You can choose to subscribe to RSS channels from a wide variety of sites. An RSS channel consists of a list of items, each containing a headline, short description, and a link to a web page with the full article.

How do I use RSS?
To use RSS, you need a RSS news reader that will allow you to subscribe and display RSS channels. RSS news readers allow you to view all the channels you choose in one place and stay current with new content soon after it is published via automatic updates.

There are many different RSS news readers available, many for free. Most are applications that you install. Some are plug-ins that work inside your web browser or email system. Others are 100% web-based, using the web browser “as is” to provide RSS functionality.

Popular News Readers Include:
- Client Applications: FeedDemon, RSS Bandit, and SharpReader
- Plug-ins: NewsGator for Outlook, Pluck for IE, and Sage for FireFox
- Web-based: Bloglines and NewsGator Online

Detailed List of News Readers

After setting up your news reader, you will be ready to use RSS. To subscribe, just right-click on one of the channels and select “Copy Shortcut” or “Copy Link Location” then paste the location of the channel into the appropriate place in your news reader (see the instructions for your particular news reader).
