On the morning of December 7, 1941, Jarman Kennard was playing Battleship with a German sympathizer on the floor of his fraternity house at Cornell University. By the summer of 1943, Kennard would be a Prisoner of War of the Germans and their Italian allies. The lone survivor when his plane was shot down over Sicily in May 1943, Kennard articulately describes the fear and deprivations of a POW, as well as the rare humorous moments to be had among his generally sympathetic Italian captors.
