Jean Bethke Elshtain has been Laura Spelman Rockefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics in the Divinity School at the University of Chicago since 1995. She was born in Windsor, Colorado and educated at the University of Colorado (M.A.) in history and Brandeis University (Ph.D.) in politics. A Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Elshtain is on the board of trustees of the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. She is co-chair of the PEW Forum on Religion and Public Life and her work focuses on identifying connections between political and ethical convictions. Dr. Elshtain has written 11 books, edited five, and produced over 200 scholarly articles, exploring the themes of the survival of democracies; marriage, families, and feminism; and state sovereignty in international relations. Her book, Who Are We?,was honored as the Best Book of 2000 by The American Theological Booksellers Association. Her other publications include: Democracy on Trial, a 1995 New York Times Notable Book; Augustine and the Limits of Power; Women and War; and the forthcoming Jane Addams and the Dream of American Democracy.
