REP. ANDREWS HOLDS 17th ANNUAL PEARL HARBOR COMMEMORATION

On Monday, December 3, 2004 abroad the U.S.S. New Jersey in Camden, I hosted my 17th annual Pearl Harbor Commemoration Event to commemorate the 66th anniversary of an event that left America shocked and speechless.  It was a gathering to remember those who have sacrificed their lives for freedom, to honor our veterans, and look back on one of the most fateful days in United States history.  I appreciate all of our program participants and guests who braved the cold and windy temperatures to join us in marking this somber occasion. It was a pleasure to see hundreds of people able to attend. I would like to extend a very special thanks to our guest speaker and Pearl Harbor survivor, Mr. Ray Hechler of Cape May, NJ.

On December 7, 1941, America experienced a shock that would not again be felt until September 11, 2001.  The Japanese led a surprise attack at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii with 423 aircraft and six carriers.  The attack caused great damage, sinking several powerful battleships, but, luckily, top prize, America's Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers, were not at the port at that time.  There were 2,251 Americans killed and 1,119 injured from this horrid assault.  Afterwards, Americans rallied together to work at home and abroad to defeat the evil Axis of Power that threatened global peace.

It was an honor to be with so many veterans and together, recognize and pay tribute to the sacrifice made by those that have served to protect this great country.  I believe we should not forget the heroism of those who have so willingly given up their life for this nation.  The Pearl Harbor attack is an unfortunate event that reminds us to be constantly attentive and prepared for threats to our nation’s security and to cherish the gifts of hope and freedom that we enjoy today.
