Rep Andrews Honors Those Who Have Fought to Preserve Our Country's Independence

This week marks the anniversary of our Nation's  independence.  Over the years, this day has meant many different things to various individuals.   Many of us gather with family and friends for cookouts and fireworks.   Some of us participate in our local Fourth of July parades and celebrations.  For all of us, it is a day to celebrate the very best America has to offer and be thankful for those who give so much to ensure our freedom.

This July 4th, we particularly honor the service of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with all of America’s veterans. Over 3,500 brave young men and women have given their lives in defense of freedom.  Thousands more have been permanently injured as a result of their service to their country.  Last week, the House passed a fiscal year 2008 veterans’ appropriations bill that provides the largest increase for veterans in the 77-year history of the VA to ensure that after five years of war, our veterans receive the quality healthcare and benefits they have earned.   It is important that Congress remain committed to ensuring the very best for those who have fought to preserve this country’s freedom.

Since September 11, 2001, most Americans have experienced a renewed patriotism and appreciation for the democratic ideals for which this country was founded.  Holidays like the Fourth of July give us yet another opportunity to reflect upon how blessed we are to live in the greatest country in the world.
