House Bans Slaughter of Horses

Last week, a bill I cosponsored passed the House that would end the gruesome practice of slaughtering horses.  HR 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, bans the transportation, possession, and sale of horses to be slaughtered for human consumption.  I urge my colleagues in the Senate to pass this legislation.

Each year, about 90,000 American horses are slaughtered for human consumption.  Horse steaks are then sent to countries in Europe and Asia to satisfy consumer demand abroad.  This is purely an export-driven commodity, one that is not valued by a majority of Americans.

I am pleased that a bipartisan majority came together in the House to pass this important piece of legislation.  The American horse is a symbol of our nation’s heritage, and we should treat them humanely.
