REP ANDREWS EARNS TOP GRADE FROM HUMAN RIGHTS GROUP FOR EFFORT TO END DARFUR GENOCIDE

The genocide in Darfur is a tragedy that demands a global response.  That is why I have fought, and will continue to fight for the US to provide more money to the African Mission forces in Sudan and additional humanitarian aid to Darfur.  I have been aggressive in my calls for enhanced and sustained diplomatic efforts to end the crisis and am proud to have earned an ‘A’ from the Genocide Intervention Network for these actions.

Our work, however, is not done in ending this crisis.

In 2004, Congress declared the violence in Darfur to be genocide.  The violence continues today in 2006.  As many as 400,000 men, women, and children have been killed, and more than 2.5 million displaced.  The global response to this crisis has so far been far too tepid and too slow.  While efforts to expand peacekeeping in Darfur and negotiations with the Sudanese government are important, it is critical to remember that the killing of Darfuris continues.

Ending the violence in Darfur is both a moral responsibility and in US security interests.  We must take strong, principled action to end the killing of innocent Darfuris.  I will continue to work with other Members of Congress to expand our efforts to save lives in Sudan and, ultimately, end the genocide.
