REP. ANDREWS VOTES AGAINST UNBALANCED CAMPAIGN REFORM

On April 5, 2006 I voted against H.R. 513, a bill which significantly limits Section 527 voter advocacy groups’ fundraising capabilities.  While our country is in need of campaign reform, we must not implement a law that favors the interests of one American over another and does not uphold our citizens’ right to free speech.  Campaign reform should benefit all Americans on an equal and non-partisan basis.

I am concerned that H.R. 513 would disproportionately impact one side of the national debate, as well as groups that engage exclusively in state and local elections.  While I am pleased that Congress is no longer resisting efforts at campaign reform, as it did in 2002, we must ensure America’s voice is heard.  I will continue my efforts in Congress to implement meaningful reform that will ensure that all groups have the opportunity to represent their constituencies in our political process on a fair and equal basis, regardless of the position they have taken on an issue, and regardless of whether the position is taken from a partisan perspective.
