GAO Releases VX Report

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently released its assessment of the Army's plan to dispose of VX Nerve Gas residue in the Delaware River concluding, as we have, that the Army's plan is fatally flawed.  I thank Congressman Saxton and LoBiondo for joining with me to request this report which I believe played a significant role in shaping Dupont's decision to cancel their plans to work with the Army to treat and dispose of this dangerous byproduct.  I applaud Dupont for making the right decision.

Most importantly, I want to thank the environmental groups and thousands of residents who joined with us in the fight to protect South Jersey from this ill fated plan.  Their hard work and grassroots efforts enabled us to draw attention to this issue and ultimately win this fight.

Finally, both to honor our global treaties and as a matter of national security, we have a responsibility to dispose of these dangerous chemical weapons.  As such, I plan to work with the United States Army to find a solution that allows these deadly chemicals to be disposed of in a safe and expeditious manner.
