Graves Opposes Price Gouging At Pump

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Sam Graves gave the green light today to a measure that imposes stiff penalties on anyone caught price gouging gasoline. As the traditional Memorial Day driving season approaches prices across Missouri continue to rise.

“Families shouldn’t have to worry about getting their pockets picked at the gas pump,” said Graves. “This bill will make it easier to prosecute and stop anyone who is trying to take advantage of the situation.”

The bill directs the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department to go after oil companies, traders or retail operators if they take unfair advantage or charge excessive prices for gasoline and other fuels.

Graves believes that the best way to ensure lower gas prices is to wean ourselves off of foreign oil. Over 60% of America’s oil comes from foreign sources and that number is still growing. Graves believes that we need to rely on alternative and renewable sources of oil, while also increasing our domestic oil exploration.

“I would much rather rely on Missouri farmers for our energy than Saudi Arabia,” said Graves. “Renewable fuels like ethanol and bio-diesel are a triple hit. They are good for the environment, good for consumers and good for producers.”

The bill, H.R. 1252, passed on a 284 to 141 vote and will now go to the Senate.
