Upton to Welcome Cancer Society’s Fight Back Express to Venetian Festival Saturday
The Fight Back Express is on a national tour with stops scheduled in Michigan this week – St. Joseph is the last stop in Michigan
ST. JOSEPH, MI – On Saturday, July 19th, Congressman Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) will welcome the American Cancer Society’s Fight Back Express bus to the Venetian festival. The bus is expected to arrive from Grand Rapids at 11:30am, and Upton will kick off the program at 12:15pm. The Fight Back Express was created to raise awareness of cancer research during the election season and help spread the stories of cancer patients, survivors and friends. The bus tour kicked off on May 4th and will end on Election Day in November.
“We have a responsibility in Congress to ensure that cancer research is a national priority and that we set aside the necessary resources to fight the disease,” said Upton. “Unfortunately, we are all too familiar with cancer and the personal toll that it takes. While cancer-related deaths in the nation have declined recently, the statistics continue to be alarming - one out of every four deaths is cancer related and nearly 1,500 individuals a day will die from cancer this year alone. Almost everyone in the nation has been touched by cancer in some form, whether as a survivor, or as a family member or loved one of a cancer patient. We cannot rest until we have a cure.”
The bus is making its way through Michigan this week with stops in Marshall, Lansing, Brighton, Royal Oak, the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Flint, Midland, the Alpen Festival in Gaylord, Big Rapids, Grand Rapids, and St. Joe on Saturday. Following the stop at the Venetian Festival, the Fight Back Express will head to Indiana.
