Secured Federal Funds to Assist Benton Harbor’s Public Safety Efforts
Upton was instrumental in the awarding of a $1,000,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) to the city of Benton Harbor to hire eight additional police officers. Upton facilitated meetings with officials from the United States Department of Justice to ensure Benton Harbor ’s voice was heard loud and clear.
In addition, in June of 2004, Upton helped to secure a $15.9 million HOPE VI grant to assist in the construction of public housing for the city of Benton Harbor. The HOPE VI grant is an integral part of the plan to revitalize the Benton Harbor community. It was a top priority found in the Governor’s Task Force report and supported by the Citizens for Progressive Change in the wake of last summer’s disturbance.
Worked to Receive Funds to Widen I-94 to Six Lanes in Kalamazoo
It has long been known that I-94 is a critical element to the continued economic growth in Southwest Michigan – particularly in Kalamazoo. Upton has secured millions in federal funds for the widening of this major roadway to ensure driver safety and continue the steady flow of goods between Chicago and Detroit.
Helping Our Rail Transportation System
Upton has always supported our nation’s rail transportation system. In 1992, he was responsible for designating the Chicago – Detroit corridor as a high-speed rail route. Improvements on this stretch of track continue and speeds have increased. Upton has a long record of support for Amtrak and knows the importance of improving its service in the Sixth District.
