Improving Our Economy and Protecting Our Workers

  • Supporting Overtime Rights

Fred Upton has consistently been a strong supporter of overtime pay provisions for those who work more than the 40 hour work week. In 2003, on a number of occasions, he voted against the Department of Labor in its attempt at altering its rules regarding the sanctity of the 40 hour work week. The 40 hour work week is long established—and Upton supports it.

  • Protecting Our Manufacturing Jobs

As a member of the Congressional Manufacturing Caucus, which was formed to try to address issues related to manufacturing job loss, trade issues, and manufacturing development, Upton understands the impact our manufacturing sector plays in the economy. He has been staunchly vigilant in protecting our industries and promoting job growth.

Upton supported legislation that funded new positions to help enforce trade laws that prevent unfair trading practices and has asked the Administration to look for ways to force China to let its currency float. Although he understands that globalization and free trade are now permanent fixtures of the world economy, Upton will continue to look at ways to bolster those sectors of the economy where the United States enjoys a comparative advantage.
