Environment, Safety & Health

As the nation's preeminent nuclear energy laboratory, INL maintains a strong safety focus. The health and safety of every employee, both on and off-the-job, is critical to our mission, and we demonstrate world-leading safety behavior, safety performance and environmental stewardship.

  • In 2001, we were recognized as a STAR site, the first national laboratory to achieve this distinction from the U. S. Department of Energy;
  • In 2005, we achieved ISO 14001 registration;
  • In 2006, we achieved Department of Energy-Voluntary Protection Program STAR recertification;
  • In 2007, we completed 3 million work-hours without a lost time injury at the Specific Manufacturing Capability (SMC);
  • In 2007, Nuclear Programs completed one year without a day away restricted transfer case;
  • In 2007, we also achieved 3.4 million work-hours without an occupational injury resulting in a day away case; and
  • Annually, our bus fleet drivers travel millions of miles without a preventable accident.

Our success is due, in part, to an overarching safety system. INL's Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) aligns various programmatic and technical safety programs to achieve the best outcomes.
