Rep. Levin Calls for Release of Report on Health Threats from Great Lakes Contamination

On February 21, Rep. Levin wrote to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) urging the public release of a long-delayed study on possible health threats from environmental hazards in certain areas adjacent to the Great Lakes.  The CDC shelved the study last July, just days before the report was to be released.  A draft of the study indicated that residents near 26 Great Lakes Areas of Concern could face higher risk of a variety of health threats, including infant mortality and several forms of cancer.

Information on Economic Stimulus Package Tax Rebates

With Congress in recess last week, Rep. Levin held public meetings with senior citizens on February 20 to outline details of the tax rebate program that was approved as part of the economic stimulus package.  “Many seniors, disabled veterans and workers that do not normally file federal income tax returns are eligible for rebates,” said Rep. Levin.  “While these individuals may not normally file returns, it is vital that anyone that believes they are eligible for a rebate file a return this year because if they do not, they will not receive their rebate.  We want to ensure that everyone eligible for a rebate receives one, especially these individuals that are likely to spend their rebates quickly and most effectively stimulate the economy.”

Remembering Our Nation’s Veterans

In 2007, Congress increased health care and benefits funding for veterans by $11.8 billion, or $5.5 billion more than the President requested.  This is the largest funding increase in the 77-year history of the Veterans Administration.  In a guest opinion article that appeared in the Oakland Press on February 19, Rep. Levin said, “One year ago this week, media reports uncovered abhorrent conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and other veterans facilities.  Congress responded to these conditions by passing recommendations of the Dole-Shalala Commission necessary to improve the treatment for our wounded warriors....  In the past 12 months, a great deal has been accomplished, but there is much more that remains to be done.”

The Week Ahead

The House reconvenes this week to consider the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act [H.R. 5351] as well as the Public Housing Asset Management Improvement Act [H.R. 3521].  Lawmakers may also consider legislation [H.Res. 895] to create an independent Office of Congressional Ethics.
