(Washington D.C.)- Today, U.S. Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI), Ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee, responded to remarks House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Jim McCrery (R-LA) made to reporters after a speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce:
"Last year, Jim McCrery introduced legislation to divert Social Security funds into private accounts and then cut guaranteed benefits to offset the accounts. Today he tells reporters that Social Security is first in a logical order of business for Congress in 2007. This is a reminder that, given the chance, Republicans will privatize Social Security. It's also an illustration of the upside-down priorities that have led them to ignore real issues facing working families, like gas prices, health care, and job insecurity."
