Society of State Directors of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation*


 

The Society is a professional association whose members supervise and coordinate programs in health, physical education, and related fields within state departments of education.

The Society's Program in Action

The Society is funded under two Capacity-Building Assistance categories:

  • Preventing HIV Infections: State and Local Education Agencies.
     
  • Preventing Chronic Diseases: Promoting Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHPs).

For Preventing HIV Infections: State and Local Education Agencies, The Society is

  • Working with the National Stakeholders Collaborative (NSC) to plan and conduct a National Stakeholders Meeting (NSM) Reconvene to strengthen collaboration between state health and state education agencies to support and improve prevention of HIV, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and unintended and teen pregnancy for youth. The NSC is comprised of the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD), the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD), the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP), and the Society.
     
  • Providing ongoing follow-up support and technical assistance to NSM participants to identify and overcome barriers to integrating programs and policies that help prevent HIV infection, STDs, and unintended and teen pregnancy.
     
  • Conducting a one-day workshop, held in conjunction with the organization’s Annual Meeting, for all DASH-funded SEA and LEA HIV Coordinators on HIV Prevention for Youth with Special Needs.
     
  • Completing a strategic planning meeting to determine the current needs of the SEAs and developing a joint agenda (strategic plan) to strengthen HIV education in the nation’s schools, targeting youth most at risk for HIV infections.
     
  • Creating an online, searchable Directory of HIV and Coordinated School Health Program Staff.
     
  • Utilizing various methods, including newsletters, email, postal distribution, Web postings, and presentations at conferences/meetings, to share information related to reducing sexual risk behaviors with members and other interested parties.

For Preventing Chronic Diseases: Promoting Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHPs), The Society is

  • Developing an updated version of the PowerPoint® presentation Making the Connection, a tool for state and local education decision-makers, parents, teachers, and administrators that demonstrates the value of implementing a CSHP approach to connect student health with academic achievement.
     
  • Working jointly with the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) and the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) in the Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) Collaborative. The Collaborative convenes four, 2-day trainings (with at least five state teams per meeting) that bring together state education and state health agency coordinators to strengthen collaborative efforts to improve the delivery, effectiveness, and sustainability of local CSHPs.
     
  • Providing 12-month follow-up technical assistance via conference calls, website support, resource identification, and on-site visits to previously trained agency coordinators, to support the establishing and strengthening of a statewide CSHP.
     
  • Creating an online posting of technical assistance resources to build state education agency capacity to implement CSHPs on the local level.
     
  • Creating an online, searchable directory of CSHP staff with state education and health agencies.
