Baltimore, Md.—Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, former Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, released the following statement in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the integration within the armed forces of the United States:

"Through his executive order to integrate our nation's armed services, President Truman helped our country leap forward toward greater social justice for minorities and women, pacing the road to equality within the U.S. and strengthening the very foundation and moral character of our nation.

"All too often in our past, minorities in our military have been forced to endure the same injustice and discrimination that has marred our society's history. Yet, the patriotism of these men and women has kept the transformation envisioned by President Truman alive—and minorities continue to serve with distinction in our armed forces.

"Minorities have played a pivotal role in shaping our military, and I am proud to see this role flourish today, serving as a model for an integrated society that can truly offer justice for all. And, just as we came together as a nation to ensure the full implementation of Executive Order 9981, I am pleased to join my brothers and sisters of all races across the country in celebrating the 60th anniversary of this momentous occasion."
