Washington, DC— Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), a member of the Joint Economic Committee, released the following statement in response to the President’s remarks in support of a bipartisan economic stimulus package:

“We are undoubtedly in the midst of an economic crisis, on the brink of falling into a recession. Low- and middle-class families throughout Maryland and the rest of the country are already experiencing the fallout from the lagging economy. Hardworking families are losing their homes and their jobs—along with their dreams. In the face of record-high heating oil and gas prices, people are being forced to make sacrifices just to keep their homes warm this winter or drive to work.

“We need to enact a bipartisan stimulus package that is timely, targeted, and temporary, and I am encouraged that President Bush seems willing to cooperate with Congress to reach this end. I will continue working with my colleagues to ensure that we act quickly to pass the package resulting from current negotiations.”
