Washington, DCCongressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) released the following statement in recognition of World AIDS Day on Saturday, December 1, 2007:

“Since beginning my career of public service in 1983, I have been an outspoken advocate for addressing the devastation wrought by AIDS both here in the United States and around the world. During the past two decades, the climate surrounding this deadly disease has changed significantly. We have come miles with regard to understanding and treating this disease as well as with attitudes regarding its victims. However, our journey is nowhere near complete.

“The world cannot hide from the reality of HIV and AIDS, and we must continue the movement to educate people on these diseases and to dispel the myths surrounding their contraction. While it is difficult to believe in this day and age that the AIDS epidemic could possibly still be fueled by homophobia, racism, and sexism, the reality is that such blind ignorance still exists.

“More than 32 million people worldwide are suffering from AIDS this year—including 2.5 million people who were newly diagnosed. For these people, and their loved ones, every day is AIDS Day. It is for their struggle, as well as for the memory and honor of those who have already lost their lives, that we must renew our commitment tomorrow on World AIDS Day to battle this disease.

“I am dedicated to continuing my fight against this epidemic by spreading awareness and allocating funds for its treatment and prevention. It is only by continuing to actively speak out about and act against AIDS that we will be able to find victory in our cause.”
