Congressman Cummings Honors His Time with Congresswoman Carson

Washington, DCCongressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) released the following statement today in response to Representative Julia Carson’s announcement that she is suffering from lung cancer and will not be seeking re-election:

“For over a decade, Julia Carson has ardently fought to represent the interests of Indiana’s 7th Congressional District, and I am confident that she will use that same courage and determination as she begins this new battle against terminal lung cancer. My deepest prayers go out to my beloved friend and colleague and her loved ones.

“As the first woman and the first African American to represent the City of Indianapolis, Congresswoman Carson has served as both an inspiration and a symbol of the progress of our nation’s journey toward civil rights for all. Her dedication to serving her constituents and our nation has been unrelenting, and her legacy will be remembered for years to come.

“The time I have spent serving with Congresswoman Carson, including on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, has been marked by her compassion and selfless service, and I have been truly honored to work with this great leader. There is no doubt that in her decision to leave Congress she is also leaving behind a very large pair of shoes to fill.”
