ME Participates in RSA Conference

Members of the Office of Technology Strategy (ME) members of the 14th Annual RSA Information Security Conference in San Francisco. One panel discussed the Homeland Security Presidential Directive12, Personal Identity Verification (PIV) of Federal Employees and Contractor, policy and draft technical standard, that provides a roadmap for identity management of Federal employees and contractors. Another panel discussed key components of a national trust framework for identity management, as advanced by the Federal E-Authentication Initiative and the Electronic Authentication Partnership (EAP), a public-private effort. The EAP plans to conduct pilots to demonstrate interoperability across multiple products and authentication technologies. For additional information on the EAP, see http://www.eapartnership.org. A third panel discussed traditional authentication methods (PIN, Password and PKI), and then compared them to knowledge-based authentication (KBA) in terms of potential uses, operational benefits, implementation alternatives, and security and privacy considerations. In addition, the Federal E-Authentication Initiative sponsored a successful interoperability demonstration for the software products from 12 commercial vendors, teamed with GSA's E-Authentication Initiative to demonstrate interoperability of the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) 2.0, an open standard for security developed by the OASIS standards consortium. E-Authentication intends to adopt SAML 2.0 when it qualifies for inclusion in the E-Authentication architecture. Federal Identity Management to be Highlighted at the Smart Card Alliance Conference in March

The Office of Technology Strategy (ME) will contribute to the Fourth Annual Smart Cards in Government Conference March 9-11, 2005. The Smart Card Project Manager’s Meeting, to be led by John Moore of ME, will be held in conjunction with the conference. Judith Spencer, also of ME, will speak on the development Federal Identity Management Handbook to support the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 and the recently issued Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 201.
