Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a specific group
of diseases or conditions resulting from severe immunosuppression
related to infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
the number of new cases of AIDS in the United States has declined
substantially in recent years. This is the first decrease since
the epidemic began in the early 1980's. The availability of more
effective treatments, such as combination drug therapies, has
contributed greatly to this decline and to the decrease in deaths
from AIDS. However, there is no notable drop in the spread of
HIV infection. At this time, approximately one in 300 persons
in the United States is infected with HIV. The leading modes of
exposure continue to be homosexual sex and injecting drugs.
HIV/AIDS continues to spread rapidly in the Third World, particularly
in parts of Asia and Africa. Exposure in those regions is primarily
through heterosexual contact. The drugs used to combat HIV/AIDS
in the United States are often too expensive or unavailable in
Third World countries.
This compilation, an update of TB 91-9, is not intended to be
a comprehensive bibliography. Based on the holdings of the Library
of Congress, it is designed -- as the name of the series implies
-- to put the reader "on target." Since any publication
on HIV/AIDS cannot remain current for long, the section of the
bibliography containing additional sources of information, especially
online sources, should be particularly useful.
