"Gardening" is a deceptively simple term for a complex pursuit.
Gardeners' interests can range from the creation of floral radiographs
to the science of composting, from growing giant pumpkins to orchid
culture. A wealth of resources reflects this wide span of interests,
and numerous books, websites, journal articles, organizations,
and associations address gardeners' interests and concerns.
Because it would be impossible to include every worthwhile new
or classic resource on gardening in this guide, the scope of this
Tracer Bullet is necessarily limited to a representative
sampling from the wide array of excellent resources available.
In addition to providing references to basic gardening information,
suggestions are included for research in some specialized areas
of interest, including garden design, gardening to attract wildlife,
gardening with children, container gardening, and horticultural
therapy.
Not intended to be a comprehensive bibliography,
this guide is designed, as the name of the series implies, to
put the reader "on target".

Abstracting and Indexing Services that index relevant
journal articles and other literature include online services such
as Infotrac, Proquest, EbscoHost, Wildlife
Worldwide, Agricola, and various databases in OCLC's
First Search, such as Biological and Agricultural Index,
Readers Guide and Article First.
Some suggested terms for searching are "Gardening," "Kitchen Gardens,"
and "Organic Gardening." More specific headings, such as "Wildflowers"
"Perennials," or "Container Gardening" may be appropriate, depending
upon the topic of interest. Note: Consult reference staff for location
and format of abstracting and indexing (A&I) services in the
Science Reading Room.
