S. 1993 IN THE MARCH 3, 2000 BUSINESS MEETING

Government Information Security Act (S. 1993)
This legislation was the result of the Governmental Affairs Committee oversight work in the area of information security and cyberterrorism. It is intended to protect Federal government information systems from cyberattack. Among other things, S. 1993 would strengthen the Office of Management and Budget’s information security duties, consistent with its existing responsibilities under the Paperwork Reduction Act; establish Federal agency accountability for information security as needed to cost-effectively protect the assets and operations of the agency; provide for the application of a unified and logical set of governmentwide controls by including national security systems within the application of the legislation; and require agencies to have an annual independent evaluation of their information security programs and practices.

S. 1993 was introduced by Chairman Thompson and Ranking Minority Member Joseph I. Lieberman (D-CT) on November 19, 1999.
